Programme changes to cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) requirements

The subject material for the CPR component of the competence programme (CP) is set out in New Zealand Gazette April 2017 Notice Number 2017-go1985(external link).

It states:
Instruction in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation must be provided so as to achieve the CPRL2 requirements of the New Zealand Resuscitation Council (NZRC)

Note: The recently published in the New Zealand Gazette April 2019 Notice Number 2019-go1762(external link) has the same wording, but does not take effect until 17 October 2019.

What has changed?

The NZ Resuscitation Council has replaced the CORE Level 2 Training (CPRL2) with the updated Emergency Care Instructors Assessments. The NZRC advise that the course covers much of the same material as previously, but is part of a broader reform of their educational programme.

What this means for you?

All providers must ensure that Instruction in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation is provided to;

A level that would meet the standards taught and assessed by New Zealand Resuscitation Council Emergency Care Instructors (ECI) or an equivalent.

When does this take effect?

The new NZRC CPR requirements must now be used or provisions are put in place to ensure they are adhered to as soon as it is practicable.

The gazette notice will be redrafted and updated to reflect the new requirements at the next available opportunity.
