Registration New Zealand experience pathway
Registration requirements
To become an Electrical Inspector, you must complete the following requirements:
Experience pathway
- Pass a Board approved Electrical Inspectors coursework and written examination;
- Pass a Board approved Electrical Inspectors practical assessment;
- Complete the approved Safety training within the timeframe;
Safety training - Complete a Competence programme course this needs to be entered into our online system by your course provider (must be active and current at the time of applying for your practising licence):
Competence programme course - Been registered as an Electrician with the EWRB in New Zealand for not less than 3 years and
- Complete not less than three years (6000 hours) practical experience as a registered Electrician in carrying out prescribed electrical work that is satisfactory to the Board.

Minimum amount of work experience required
- 3 years (6000 hours) as a registered Electrician, and
- Been registered as an Electrician with the EWRB in New Zealand for a minimum of 3 years
Required work experience
All electrical work of an electrician and satisfactory experience in carrying out some high-risk work which may include:
- High voltage electrical installations
- Mains parallel generating system
- Hazardous areas
- Photovoltaic array system
- Mains work on MEN switchboards and main earthing systems
- Medical cardiac and body protected areas
- Certification of high risk prescribed electrical work
Required documents
You must provide the following documents in your application.
Certified proof of identity
- A certified copy of the front and back of your current New Zealand Driver’s Licence; or
- A certified copy of your Passport biographic page.
*Certified: Certification of your copied documents must be done by either a Justice of the Peace, a Public Notary, a Solicitor or NZ Court Registrar.
The official confirmation that the copies of your documents are identical to the original documents. The confirmation is issued by an authorised public authority or a Notary.

Work history references from supervisor/employer(s)
You must provide detailed references of your work history.
Your references must:
- Detail the prescribed electrical work experience that you have completed as a Registered Electrician covering 3 years (6000 hours) of work experience including high risk work;
Prescribed electrical work – New Zealand Legislation - Include the start and end dates of employment for each company;
- Contain sufficient experience in the area you seek registration;
- Be on company letterhead;
- Be signed and dated by your employer and
- Contain email contact details for your referee.
If you have been self-employed, you will need to complete a Statutory Declaration and provide evidence of being self-employed e.g. Certificate of Verification on the Companies Register.
Statutory Declaration — New Zealand Government
The Statutory Declaration must:
- Be certified: Certified documents
- Detail the prescribed electrical work experience that you have completed covering 3 years (6000 hours) of work experience
- Include the start and end dates of employment for each company
- Include the number of hours, days, weeks, or months of work experience you have completed
- Contain sufficient experience in the area you seek registration
High Risk Evidence
Supply evidence of 3 examples of high risk work that you have completed:
- 3 x ROI’s of high risk work you have completed; or
- A screenshot, or PDF document of your high risk work entries that must be entered on the Worksafe High Risk Data Base:

Passport quality photo
A photo that meets the criteria for your ID card:
- A face, head and shoulders shot, looking directly at the camera and less than 6 months old;
- Plain, light coloured background;
- No sunglasses, glasses with tinted lenses OR headwear that obscures your face;
- 3:4 – width to height ratio, in full colour;
- Between 50KB and 5MB in size (or printed image for paper applications) and
- Saved in .jpg or .jpeg format.

Payment details
You can pay for your application by credit or debit card. All payments made outside the New Zealand banking system must be made by credit card.
