Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition
If you have a current Australian licence, your application is processed in accordance with the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (TTMRA). Check that your licence is recognised in New Zealand – the table below has Australian licences that we are aware of and their equivalent registration class in New Zealand.

Registration Requirements
To become licenced in New Zealand, your current Australian licence can be converted to an EWRB registration and practising licence if you meet the below requirements:
- You hold a current Australian practising licence and your licence is deemed equivalent to one of the New Zealand registration classes.
Required Documents
You must provide the following documents in your application.
Certified proof of identity
- A certified copy of the front and back of your current New Zealand Driver’s Licence; or
- A certified copy of your current Passport biographic page.
*Certified: Certification of your copied documents must be done by either a Justice of the Peace, a Public Notary, a Solicitor or NZ Court Registrar.
The official confirmation that the copies of your documents are identical to the original documents. The confirmation is issued by an authorised public authority or a Notary.
Certified copy of your current Australian Practising/Electrical Licence
- A certified colour copy of the front and back of your current Australian Practising/Electrical Licence.
*Certified: Certification of your copied documents must be done by either a Justice of the Peace, a Public Notary, a Solicitor or NZ Court Registrar.
The official confirmation that the copies of your documents are identical to the original documents. The confirmation is issued by an authorised public authority or a Notary.
Certified Section 19 Statutory Declaration form
You must complete the Statutory Declaration form and upload a certified copy in your application.

Passport quality photo
- A photo that meets the criteria for your ID card:
- A face, head and shoulders shot, looking directly at the camera and less than 6 months old;
- Plain, light coloured background;
- No sunglasses, glasses with tinted lenses OR headwear that obscures your face;
- 3:4 – width to height ratio, in full colour;
- Between 50KB and 5MB in size (or printed image for paper applications); and
- Saved in .jpg or .jpeg format.

Payment details
You can pay for your application by credit or debit card. All payments made outside the New Zealand banking system must be made by credit card.

If you apply and you have not completed the requirements, your application will be declined and the application fee will not be refunded.

You cannot apply for a practising licence until we have completed your assessment. We will contact you by email to let you know when you can apply for a Practising Licence.
